Event type: Meeting
Date: 9th February 2027
Time: 10:00 am

John served as an Officer of HMRC and The Border Force for 42 years in various roles culminating as the Head Of Detection NE England and Assistant Director UK Border Force. He was a National and International trainer delivering talks on Customs strategy to senior customs officials from many countries across the world. On retirement John became a visiting lecturer to universities across the north of England.

John’s talk takes you on a fascinating journey through his career in Customs and Excise, filled with humour, intrigue, and real-life adventures! Kicking off with the captivating history of Customs and how it evolved into England’s first navy. From John’s early days as a naive Assistant Prevention Officer in the Waterguard, you will hear thrilling anecdotes about mobile rummaging and the unforgettable seizures made in the bustling ports of Whitby and Scarborough and even the local pub! Laugh along with my passenger baggage exploits, and hear about the moment that left him held at gunpoint. With plenty of humour and candid reflections, this session promises to be both entertaining and enlightening!
